With demand for broadband Internet growing exponentially in recent years, telecommunications providers are constantly challenged to keep up with demand any time and anywhere.
Such is the challenge that has prompted Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to come up with a "new approach" to deploying broadband capacity whenever and wherever there is a need.
The new approach that includes a range of solutions is dubbed as Liquid Net, named so because NSN said the new approach "delivers services and content fluidly across the network."
NSN said the Liquid Net approach allows telecoms operators to set up their network to "self-adapt" to be able to meet demands for capacity and coverage. This approach is based on NSN's estimates that mobile broadband subscribers will increase ten-fold while demand for data consumption will grow to 100 times higher traffic to more than 1GB per mobile user per day.
Given these estimates, NSN recommends that future networks must be scalable enough to adapt to "fluid demand" from more users at different times of the day and at different locations.
Unfreezing network capacity
"Capacity in today's conventional networks is typically frozen in separate places; at individual base station sites, in parts of the core network that manage voice and data services, or in the optical and IP transport networks," added said Marc Rouanne, head, network systems, Nokia Siemens Networks. "Each is a potential bottleneck to someone getting the broadband service they want at a particular moment. Fluctuating, unpredictable demand in one part of the network means huge chunks of capacity can be left idle elsewhere, making poor use of existing investments."
Liquid Net's strategy is to unfreeze so-called frozen network capacity when demand arises.
"As much as 50 percent of a conventional core network's capacity can be dormant. Instead, Liquid Net unleashes frozen network capacity into a reservoir of resources that can flow to fulfill unpredictable demand, wherever and whenever people use broadband," explained Rouanne.
Liquid Net includes hardware, such as base stations, and software applications categorised as Liquid Radio, Liquid Core, and Liquid Transport, which can be implemented together or separately.
