Microsoft today announced the official release of the new Windows 8 operating system in 17 markets across Asia Pacific.
Pre-launch reviews of the operating system and its "Modern" user-interface have been plentiful and mixed, the launch will allow for some solid insight on the uptake and approval rating by consumers and enterprises.
In Singapore, 50 Windows 8 dedicated devices from 10 OEMs will go on sale tomorrow, including the Samsung ATIV Tab and the Sony VAIO Duo 11.
A quick take on the Windows 8: consumers will see the death of the "Start" button and the birth of "Live tiles" to access applications on the "Modern" user-interface. The operating system is suited more to touch devices and will be launched in a few versions, including; Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and ARM-based version Windows RT.
"Whether you want to consume or create, whether you want to work or play-Windows 8 delivers a no-compromise computing experience. You no longer need to choose between the fun and convenience of a tablet and the power and productivity of a PC," said Tracey Fellows, president of Microsoft Asia Pacific.
Microsoft had no specific figure on the number of applications that will be available in the APAC Windows Store but chief marketing and operating officer for Microsoft Asia Pacific Todd Cione said Microsoft "will be adding Windows 8 applications to the store every day."
Local apps that will be made available on the Singapore dedicated store include news apps by The Straits Times and Channel News Asia and travel and lifestyle apps by Wego, iProperty and SG Deals.
For upgrade to Windows 8 Pro from XP, Vista or Windows 7, download is available for US$39.99 (S$48.80). A Windows 7 PC purchased between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2012 can be upgraded to Windows 8 Pro for US$14.99 (S$18.30) under the Windows 8 Upgrade Offer.
