With the spectacular growth in digital data traffic and mobile devices, the need for scalable, cost-effective and agile networks is becoming evident. And this means strong market potential for communications specialist Brocade. KP Unnikrishnan, director of marketing, Asia Pacific, Brocade, describes his company's performance for the past year and unveils some technology trends for 2012.
1) How has 2011 been for Brocade?
2011 has been a remarkable year for Brocade. Despite a rough market, globally we reported a revenue growth of nine percent, with our Storage Area Network (SAN) business growing by eight percent and our Ethernet (IP) business posting about 13 percent growth. We saw hundreds of early adopters of Ethernet fabric through our VDX switches, which contributed to a record revenue of US$670 million posted by our Ethernet business.
Some of our key global and regional customers include CERN, TISSAT, AOL, Applied Discovery, Bank of China, Hurricane Electric, Amsterdam Internet Exchange, HealthMEDX Lucasfilms, Omega Healthcare and Reliance BIG Animation.
In Asia Pacific, Brocade has been aggressively growing its business. This has been supported with a US$100 million investment commitment to the regional IT industry to accelerate Ethernet fabric adoption and drive further migration to cloud architectures. Our Asia business grew a whopping 28 percent year-on-year. Our market share in SAN continues to be the highest in the world.
We introduced Brocade Network Subscription (BNS), an innovative open-ended network acquisition model, and also brought new products to market such as the Brocade Virtual Compute Blocks, the next wave of Ethernet fabric features and the ICX and FastIron series of enterprise campus switches, which have redefined the economics of virtualisation technology procurement and implementation.
Brocade's brand and product strength has been endorsed by key media in the region, having picked up the CMO Asia IT Award for Excellence in Branding and Marketing, rated among the top five fastest growing companies by Dataquest India, recognised as Best Alternative Networking Provider in a poll conducted by Network Magazine and listed on the MIS Asia Strategic 100, an annual index of the most important IT vendors in the Asia Pacific. We continued to be featured by "Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For" (second time in a row).
2) Looking ahead, what will be the top technology spending trends for 2012? How is Brocade looking to harness these areas of opportunities? Please also share the verticals you expect to see traction for in 2012.
2011 was perhaps the year that in the public's eyes, cloud computing hype moved towards real implementation. With the spectacular growth in digital data traffic and Internet-connected devices, the need for a scalable, cost-effective and agile network became evident and has resulted in the industry crossing the tipping point towards virtualisation.
