Apple's App Store reached its highly publicized 25 billion unit mark this weekend, the company announced Monday, as Qingdao, China, resident Chunli Fu downloaded the free version of Disney's Where's My Water? game.
In a statement, Eddy Cue, Apple senior vice president of Internet software and services, said that the growth of the App Store had been surprising.
"When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users," he said.
Currently, the App Store offers more than half a million different programs for iPhone and iPad users, 170,000 of which are designed as iPad-native applications. The company also said it has paid out more than $4 billion to developers via the App Store.
The fact that the 25 billionth download is an already popular product made by a major developer marks a change from Apple's last landmark celebration of this type. Neon Play's Paper Glider was the 10 billionth app downloaded from the App Store, which provided the British company with a substantial sales boost.
The physics-based puzzler Where's My Water?, which is available for both iOS and Android devices, challenges players to open a path for water to flow toward the objective, an alligator's bathtub. User reviews on the Android Market are generally positive, with many praising the app's simple but thought-provoking gameplay. IGN Editor Justin Davis was also highly complementary, placing Where's My Water in the same class as Cut the Rope for mobile physics puzzles.
