A*STAR and BYD to develop systems to improve autonomous vehicle capabilities

The systems to be developed include a Drive-by-Wire system and an Autonomous Vehicle fleet management system.

A*STAR's Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) recently signed a joint laboratory agreement with BYD Company Limited (BYD) - a company in China specialising in environmentally-friendly battery technologies.

Under the agreement, the two organisations will develop systems that will improve the safety and eco-friendliness of vehicles in Singapore. The systems include:

  1. A Drive-by-Wire system which uses electronic controls to activate the brakes, control the steering and operate other systems in the vehicles.
  2. An Autonomous Vehicle (AV) fleet management system that can dynamically allocate AV resources based on real-time information or vehicle-location, route, and origin-destination information.

According to Dr. Lee Shiang Long, executive director of I2R, "more than 100 electric cars with these autonomous capabilities will be developed for test-bedding purposes."

I2R will integrate its autonomous vehicle sensory system in BYD's electric vehicles. The sensory system will collect data on AV intelligence and AV fleet management.

Through this data, the AV robotic intelligence will be able to learn situation awareness in the context of Singapore traffic rules, road environment, and to make intelligent judgements based on predicted and typical responses of drivers. This enables the driverless system to co-exist seamlessly, predictably and safely with human-driven vehicles in future.
