According to the 2015 Cisco Connected World Technology Report for Malaysia, Malaysian businesses have opportunities for transformation due to the 'super-connected' behaviours of the country's workforce, driven mainly by Gen X and Gen Y employees.
The results of the study were recently unveiled in Kuala Lumpur by Albert Chai, country manager of Cisco Malaysia, and Johan Mahmood Merican, chief executive officer of national agency TalentCorp,
"The Cisco Connected World Technology Report Malaysia goes beyond highlighting the technological dependency and connectivity of Gen X and Gen Y to showing how these new generation employees are making their career decisions and shaping their work life habits based on that dependency," said Cisco's Chai.
He said the study, which focused on Gen X and Gen Y workforce from the age of 18 to 50, showed that the majority of Gen X Malaysians would choose to have their sense of smell and taste over Internet access, at 65 percent and 85 percent respectively. A similar trend is noted amongst Gen Y.
Interestingly however, more than 42 percent of Gen Y would rather have Internet access than the ability to smell the things around them, said Chai.
He said that while the findings confirmed the rise of the smartpone and tablets among the professional workforce, the laptop was still being used within the Gen X employee group, with 43.75 percent choosing it as their preferred device across personal and professional space. However, the Gen Y group (at 43.67 percent) would rather use their smartphone for the same purpose.
Chai said the study also considered Gen X and Gen Y employees' attitudes and expectations about workplace and work hours' flexibility. For example, more than 65 percent of Gen X employees prefer to have the flexibility to work at any time and from any location, instead of being confined to the office at a certain prescribed time. In fact, 56 percent of Gen X employees would be willing to take a pay cut in exchange for greater flexibility.
"While these trends may cause challenges at the office by making company data and network security more vulnerable, they also present employers with new opportunities to ensure greater employee motivation, mobility and ultimately, productivity," he said.
He said the study pointed to a need for fresh approaches in the rolling out of technology tools and solutions for the workplace as Users will continue to drive adoption,

"Supertaskers are focused, ambitious and driven," Tock said. "They are constantly looking for the next challenge and the next thing to succeed at. These are qualities that organisations need to nurture and liberate. It is not enough for employers to invest in technology. They need to ensure a holistic workplace transformation that will create a conducive environment for these young talents to thrive."
The fourth annual Cisco Connected World Technology Report was commissioned by Cisco and conducted by InsightExpress, an independent market research firm based in the United States. The global study consists of one survey: focused on generation X, generation Y and human resources across a range of industries globally. This survey includes 100 respondents from each of 15 countries, resulting in a pool of more than 3,700 respondents. The 15 countries are the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, Russia, Poland, India, China, Japan, South Korea and Australia.
The Malaysian leg of the study was conducted as a social survey to provide insight into Gen X and Gen Y's behaviour at the work place, in light of the widespread usage of technologies such as social media, mobile apps, and smartphones in their personal and professional lives.
