Hong Kong telco Comba Telecom Systems has completed a contract to supply a wireless communications system for Malaysia's SMART tunnel, which is the world's longest multi-purpose tunnel, said the company.

The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART Tunnel) in Kuala Lumpur, which is almost 10 km long, was built to manage the problems of flash floods and ease traffic congestion, and is now an essential part of the transport infrastructure in the city with daily traffic of more than 30,000 vehicles, said Comba Telecom's general manager of Southeast Asia operations, Eric Ng, speaking on 5 June 2012.

Ng said Comba successfully implemented the complete project providing multi-operator, multi-system 2G/3G distributed antenna system (DAS) products and solutions. "Comba's DAS solution operates at the GSM900, GSM1800 and UMTS frequencies used by Malaysia's operators Digi, Celcom and Maxis in this project."

He said that under the contract, Comba's wholly-owned Malaysian subsidiary Comba Technologies would provide full maintenance services. "The completion of this project has facilitated ubiquitous wireless voice and data experience with seamless handover at high speeds within the tunnel."

"We are delighted to be the wireless solutions supplier for the SMART Tunnel - one of the major infrastructure projects in Malaysia," said Ng. "The modular design of our multi-system DAS allows us to deploy a cost-effective and rapid deployment solution that is particularly suitable for such scenarios."

"Comba was awarded this project as a result of our service and support capabilities in addition to the effectiveness of our solutions," he said. "In fact, Comba has a long history and accumulated experience in wireless enhancement projects for transport infrastructure around the world such as China's Wuhan-Guangzhou and Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Rail Systems, Rio de Janeiro Metro System in Brazil, Taiwan's High Speed Rail and Singapore's underground Marina Coastal Expressway among many others."

The SMART Tunnel is a storm drainage and road structure in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The tunnel comprises of 9.7 kilometer of stormwater bypass tunnel and a 4 kilometer double deck motorway.  In 2011, the SMART Tunnel was given the UN Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for its innovative and unique management of storm water and peak hour traffic.
