National security agency CyberSecurity Malaysia and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has introduced the Malaysia Trustmark for Private Sector (MTPS) certificate protocol to e-commerce merchants and operators in Malaysia.

During an awareness session on May 31 2012 for e-commerce firms, CyberSecurity Malaysia chief operating officer Lt Col Dato' Husin Jazri (Retired) said the move was to further support the exponential growth of e-commerce and the ICT industry in Malaysia.

"The issue of trust as well as the need for reliable e-commerce transactions is being met by this initiative from  CyberSecurity Malaysia in collaboration with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI)," said Husin.

"The Malaysia Trustmark for Private Sector was initiated by CyberSecurity Malaysia to enhance trust in all e-commerce businesses in the country," he said. "When organisations participate in MTPS, we will conduct an assessment of their e-commerce websites and transaction. Once they surpass the assessment process, they will be awarded with the Malaysia Trustmark Certification."

Husin said MTPS has been introduced by the Malaysian government as a way of validating web security control of an organisation's website that is involved in e-business or e-commerce activities. "Organisation that hold Malaysia Trustmark Certificates will be recognised as trusted and reliable e-commerce business and transaction merchants or operators."

He added the implementation of MTPS would also improve the competitiveness of Malaysian merchants in the global market by conforming to the highest security standards to prevent fraud and other online illegal activities.
