LG is launching a music service that will play music "roughly six times richer and clearer than the sound quality of a typical CD".
The high fidelity music service will offer music at 24-bit/192KHz, which is "close to the original sound" of a track prior to its compression.
Two tracks can be downloaded at no cost every month, while discounts of up to 50 per cent may be made to purchases.
LG will introduce the service to owners of LG's premium smartphones via its LG SmartWorld app. This includes LG's G2, G3, G4 and G Flex 2 smartphones.
The service will help differentiate LG smartphones from rivals, said Chris Yie, the VP and head of marketing for LG Mobile. "MP3 music is perfectly fine for most people but those with Hi-Fi capable LG smartphones can experience a much richer environment."
It is unknown if the service will be made available to non-LG customers at a later date.
Few smartphone companies invest in high fidelity audio. The only other mainstream manufacturer is Sony, which although has a range that supports high resolution audio (HRA) and an affiliate music label, does not offer high-fidelity content.
Entrepreneur and rapper Jay Z launched a high-fidelity music service, called Tidal, earlier this year, with mixed success. A subscription to Tidal for lossless audio is priced at $24 a month.
A progressive rollout of LG's music service will commence later this month. It will be introduced to 70 countries, including United States, Australia, Brazil, China, France, Italy, Russia and the United Kingdom. Pricing details will be revealed closer to the service's local launch.
