LucasArts Singapore to be shut down

Nurdianah Md Nur | April 4, 2013
The move is in line with the company’s strategy to focus on outside licensing model.

In line with the announcement earlier today that Disney has shut down LucasArts, the gaming arm of Lucasfilm, its Singapore office will follow suit.

Rasa Buckley, the communications manager at Lucasfilm, stated that the move is part of the company’s strategy to have game titles developed externally and then be licensed by Lucasfilm.

Current game development projects at LucasArts have been ceased and the company is looking for opportunities to hand them over to external partners.

With the closure, the staff in Singapore will be laid off but the number of employees affected is not clear.

Buckley did mention though that “the company is actively helping those affected to find possible options of transferring to other positions” in Lucasfilm.

The change in strategy to focus on an outside licensing model aims to minimise the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality ‘Star Wars’ games, according to LucasArts.

Aside from Star Wars, LucasArts produces popular titles such as "Maniac Mansion," "The Secret of Monkey Island" and "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis."
