SINGAPORE, 9 NOVEMBER 2010 - Global communication services provider Alcatel-Lucent is claiming a major milestone in its ongoing long-term evolution (LTE) trial for the SingTel Group.
LTE is a next generation advanced wireless mobile radio technology set to succeed current 3G WCDMA/HSDPA/HSUPA systems. LTE networks will enable fixed-to-mobile migrations of Internet applications such as voice over IP (VoIP), video streaming, music downloading, mobile TV and many others.
LTE networks will also provide the capacity to support an explosion in demand for connectivity from a new generation of consumer devices tailored to those new mobile applications.
Alcatel-Lucent was selected as one of the vendors by the SingTel Group for the regional LTE trial, which began in the first half of 2010. In a statement, the company said the first phase of the LTE trial was tested on 10 MHz bandwidth, including low latency, quality of service and seamless mobility testing.
"Several end-user services covered under this stage were uplink and downlink high-speed Internet access, file transfers, high-definition video streaming, and real-time online gaming," said the Alcatel-Lucent statement. "All of these services were tested simultaneously under a wide range of scenarios, conditions, and environments."
The company said results revealed "excellent network stability and very good performance, in line with 3GPP standards expectations, using Alcatel-Lucent's end-to-end LTE solution".
Rajeev Singh-Molares, head of Alcatel-Lucent's activities in the Asia Pacific, said this first successful phase was a major step in the trial and highlights Alcatel-Lucent's position at the forefront of the development of 4G.
"We are committed to delivering an end-to-end LTE solution that can support the needs of the SingTel Group and significantly enhance the user experience for the consumers and enterprises," Singh-Molares said.
The next phase of trial will cover more advanced LTE features covering data throughput enhancements, VoIP, integration and service continuity between 2G/3G/HSPA and LTE, self-optimising networks (SON), network reliability and security, among others.
With operations in more than 130 countries, Alcatel-Lucent provides solutions to deliver voice, data and video communication services to end-users.
