Manufacturing vital for Singapore: Minister

Ross O. Storey | June 6, 2011
Singapore's manufacturing industry has been acknowledged as one key reason for the strong rebound of the Lion City economy after the global financial crisis.

The minister also highlighted the overall contribution of Singapore's energy and chemicals industry.

"For sure, our energy and chemicals industry has grown to be a sizeable and productive industry in our economy," the minister said. "It accounts for almost 2.5 per cent of Singapore's GDP (30 per cent of manufacturing output) and has created 50,000 jobs.

"Value-added per worker stands at S$0.26 million [US$211,000], 1.9 times the average of the overall manufacturing sector.  It is a great example of knowledge-based industry."
