Meet RIM's new CEO Thorsten Heins

Research in Motion Sunday night announced a change of leadership, with insider Thorsten Heins taking over the CEO reins from co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie.

The public's first chance to "meet" the new CEO -- who has been with RIM for four years, most recently as COO -- came in the form of a video released by RIM on YouTube, in which Heins talks about his excitement at taking on the job and his belief that the company can be one of the top three players going forward. He claims RIM's strength is innovation, but that it needs to execute better and more quickly ("We need to get a bit more disciplined in our own processes"). Heins also says the company needs to get closer to consumers and that he plans to bring in more marketing expertise to help get that done.

Calls for a leadership change have grown louder in recent months and weeks, especially in light of a RIM announcement late last year that its BlackBerry 10 OS devices wouldn't arrive until late next year, later than expected.
