Diners at a hawker centre in Bedok, Singapore, that will be opened in October this year can expect to go cashless and surf free Internet while having their meal there.
Located at Blk 208B New Upper Changi Road, the new hawker centre will offer Wireless@SG service. The nationwide wireless broadband programme allows any WiFi-enabled devices to be connected to the Internet via a registered Wireless@SG account.
Several stalls at the hawker centre will equipped with NETS terminals too, providing diners the option of paying with the NETS contactless card. However, not all stall owners welcome the move. According to Today, a hawker, who declined to be named, said that going cashless is "not quite sustainable [as it is not] the main way of payment for customers when they're eating at a hawker centre."
The new hawker centre, which can accommodate up to 1,000 people, will be replacing the existing hawker centre at Blk 207 New Upper Changi Road.
