Western Digital (WD) Malaysia has launched two personal cloud solutions: the WD My Cloud for consumers and My Cloud EX2 for prosumers to save, access and share all their photos, videos and files from any device, anytime - without sacrificing privacy, according to the storage solutions provider.

WD has launched the two devices to help users organise, centralise and store their content while allowing the ability for remote access.

During the launch, WD executives cited research firm Gartner estimates that the average household will own about 3.3 terabytes (TB) of digital content by 2016. This was  paralleled by "the explosive growth of Internet-connected devices, with the current U.S. household owning 5.7 connected devices, according to The NPD Group."

"Families are connecting, sharing, syncing, and backing-up numerous mobile devices and computers in their household, with the amount of digital data being created on these devices growing dramatically," said IDC's senior research analyst, storage systems, Liz Conner. "Personal cloud is an ideal solution to simplify the complex issue of organizing digital files across various devices so that users can enjoy their digital videos, photos and music on all of their devices."

The My Cloud, which is available in  2 TB, 3 TB, and 4 TB capacities, can also serve as a home's digital entertainment hub that can then be streamed to any DLNA-certified multimedia device such as a WD TV Live media player, as well as smart TVs and gaming consoles.

Meanwhile, WD My Cloud EX2 adds advanced NAS [network attached storage] features with Up to 8 TB  of capacity for heavy users such as creative professionals, prosumers and workgroups. Advanced features include data serving options including an integrated file server, FTP server, backup server and a P2P download server. Users can download and run a host of third party apps, including aMule, Icecast, Joomla!, phpBB, phpMyAdmin, Transmission, SqueezeCenter, and others.
