Inserting natural samples directly into the VereFlu chip, bypassing the long culturing process that makes other testing methods take days to weeks
Veredus Laboratories, a Singapore-based subsidiary of STMicroelectronics, announced that its VereFlu lab-on-chip can detect accurately the current subtype of H7N9 (Avian Flu) infection within two hours.
VereFlu was initially built on STMicroelectronics lab-on-chip platform in 2008 as a portable molecular diagnostic test for rapid detection of all major influenza types at the point of need.
Rosemary Tan, chief executive of Veredus, said the effectiveness of VereFlu proved through the current aviation flu outbreak in China has solidified their vision of having a multiplexed molecular test. "Our customers can be assured that with VereFlu, they are able to detect H7N7 and we are able to deliver immediately a fast, reliable surveillance system that can be deployed to help monitor the current situation," she said.
The H7N9 virus has been found responsible for the bird flu outbreak currently in various parts of China.
As traditional testings could take up to weeks, VereFlu is a breakthrough device that delivers fast and accurate results, increasing its life-saving potential.
Besides detecting the current H7N9 influenza, VereFlu is able to detect other human subtypes of influenza such as A (H1, H3, H5, H7, H9) and B viruses, including killer avian H5N1, and pandemic H1N1/2009, all in a single test.
