More than 50 Malaysian women working for French communications solutions provider Alcatel-Lucent have been told that there is no limit to their career in the company.
At an event held to celebrate International Women's Day in Kuala Lumpur, Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) Malaysia president and country manager Mohd Fazlin Shah Mohd Salleh said, on13 March 2012, that the company noted the significant contributions made by the women employees and confirmed its commitment to support their career aspirations.
"We recognise the achievements of the women in ALU, and we acknowledge the significant contributions you have made to the company. Each of you has made a difference in your own way. There is no 'glass ceiling' in this organisation and the sky's the limit. Continue to challenge yourself and push for greater success in your career."
Malaysian government research agency MIMOS cluster head and research director of psychometrics, Dr Haniza Yon, was guest speaker. "The definition of success is different for each woman. It is not always about having a bigger office, or a bigger pay cheque. One must know what one really wants and then go all out in order to achieve it. Women should feel confident that they can be as successful in their jobs as men. Recognition by employers is also a major factor in developing confidence in employees."
During the session, which included the sharing of work experiences, Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia network design division's Hew Ling Chee said: "Women leaders need to work harder than men. I started as a junior network engineer in Alcatel-Lucent in 2006, and I was working with male leaders who were old enough to be my father! I worked hard and as time went by they came to respect and recognise my work. Alcatel-Lucent has given me the flexibility and the opportunity to learn and that's why I have stayed here for six years."
"As women, sometimes we can be very critical of other womenfolk," said Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia senior account manager, Pauline Goh. "We should, however, be supportive and give other women an opportunity to be leaders. It is very important that we should have the confidence to take on bigger and greater roles. I believe that we should connect, communicate and network with our colleagues in order to grow and gain recognition within the organisation."
