Three Malaysian students win at Intel's international science fair

Three students from Malaysia won two awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2011 in Los Angeles.

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 MAY 2011 - Three Malaysian students have won two awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2011 (Intel ISEF) in Los Angeles, US.

Technology firm Intel Malaysia country manager of sales and marketing Prakash Mallya said the students Zawin Najah Binti Zulkefli from Sekolah Menengah Sains Tuanku Syed Putra won a Third Place Grand Award in the field of Environmental Sciences for her research project called the Green Based Conducting Polymer Sensor. "She was presented with a cash prize of US$1,000 for her research into an eco-friendly sensor that can be used for multiple purposes, including the detection of hazardous gases and explosives."

"In addition, students Haleeda Hilmi and Nurul Amira Salehin of Tunku Kurshiah College, Seremban, received a Fourth Place Grand Award in the field of Environmental Management and US$500 for their Fishy Detector project," said Mallya."I am pleased to announce that our young Malaysian scientists have emerged as winners from Intel ISEF 2011," he said. "Malaysia has consistently produced winners over the last 10 years and this shows that Malaysian youth have what it takes to be the next generation of scientists, engineers and inventors."

"Intel Malaysia would continue to encourage critical thinking among Malaysian youths, who represent the next wave of innovators for the country, in line with the country's vision to build a knowledge-driven and high income nation by 2020," said Mallya.

Since 1999, 85 Malaysian students have participated in Intel ISEF, and the country has so far produced 19 award winners, including the three award winners this year.
