(Update) Local groups including 'Anonymous' attack Malaysia websites

AvantiKumar | June 16, 2011
'90% of the attacks on 91 Malaysian websites came from local hackers' and that international hacker group 'Anonymous' is not solely responsible: MOSTI

CyberSecurity Malaysia's Husin said,  “[As of June 16] we are aware that several websites have already been hacked. At present, we are not be able to elaborate further but we believe that rectification process is being done by relevant authorities to address the issue”

"All cyber threats are to be taken seriously because of the characteristics of the cyber environment which is closely inter-linked, hence the name ‘world wide web’ and ‘internet’," said Husin. "We are aware of the hack threat and we believe that the threat is real. We have alerted the relevant parties and government agencies. The relevant authorities will issue media statement as appropriate."

Preventive measures

Malaysian police chief Ismail Omar said, "There are many agencies involved in this [operation] and we will get to the bottom of this. Investigation needs to be done and we need to protect our systems at the same time."

Russian security firm Kaspersky Lab's director, global research and analysis team, Costin G. Raiu, pointed out that it is generally a mistake to warn potential targets of an attack but conceded: "Of course, a highly sophisticated targeted attack will always succeed – this is why there should be mitigation steps but also disaster recovery procedures – like backups, server replacement / relocation and redunandacy."

Security firm F-Secure Corporation chief research officer Mikko Hypponen said the attack on www.malaysia.gov.my was mostly a symbolic act. "It was organised via IRC chat on irc.anonops.li (channel #opmalaysia)."

"This is a good example of how vulnerable the Web is," said F-Secure security advisor, Asia. Goh Su Gim, who is based in F-Secure's Lab in Malaysia. "It is a good wake up call to all of us. The best thing that internet users can do to protect again any threats is to have up to date security solution on all the devices that connect to the internet."
