Yahoo CEO reaffirms decision to prohibit telecommuting

John P. Mello Jr. | April 22, 2013
Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer defended her decision this week at a Great Place to Work conference, but Earth Day facts don't back her rationale.

Following Yahoo's backtracking on telecommuting, work-at-home advocates feared Mayer was setting a trend for other large employers with telecommuting programs. The decision by Best Buy to scrap its work-at-home program announced on the heels of the Yahoo move did nothing to allay those concerns.

However, a survey conducted in the days following the Yahoo decision by Challenger, Gray & Christmas revealed that companies with telecommuting programs are going to keep them.

Of 120 human resources executives polled by the global outplacement and executive coaching firm, 80 percent of them have telecommuting programs. Of those with such programs, 97 percent said they have no plans to eliminate the practice.
