KUALA LUMPUR, 8 SEPTEMBER 2010 -- A new partnership between mobile communications provider DiGi Telecommunications (DiGi) and insurance firm Etiqa Takaful will provide DiGi customers with Takaful (Islamic insurance) products via mobile devices with SMS activation.

DiGi chief executive officer, Henrik Clausen, said the partnership has launched the Takaful Personal Accident Plan Takaful PA Plan which gives all DiGi postpaid and prepaid subscribers an Islamic insurance option with the choice of either the US$16,000 (RM50,000) or US$32,000 (RM100,000) coverage for a nominal 96 US cents (RM3) or US$1.92 (RM6) per month, respectively.

"[This complements DiGi's] existing conventional insurance offering as well as the advantage of comprehensive coverage options on mobile minus the hassle of filling up complicated forms and having to meet agents," said Clausen.

The wide use of mobile phones today has triggered development of mobile applications for conventional services to cater to changing customer needs," he said.

In this instance, our Takaful offerings will help us to value-add our current services and address a wider customer base with different preferences," said Clausen. "By partnering the No.1 Takaful provider in the country, our customers who prefer an Islamic option now have the choice of a reliable Syariah (Islamic law) compliant Takaful PA plan at their finger tips.

 Multi-channel insurance

This partnership with DiGi proves Etiqa's capability as a true multi-channel insurance provider and takaful distributors as customers can now obtain insurance and takaful protection through SMS in addition to our usual channels of 23,000 agents, 33 branches, 450 Maybank branches, and other third party banks around the country, and through the Etiqa Oneline call centre and, said Etiqa chief executive officer and director, Dato' Aminuddin MD Desa.

"Etiqa, which won the Most Outstanding Takaful Company award at the recent Kuala Lumpur Islamic Finance Award 2010, offers the Etiqa Takaful Personal Accident Plan," said Aminuddin. "This plan provides coverage for personal accidents to any Malaysian and non-Malaysian individual aged between 12 and 70 years, and offers 24 hours worldwide coverage."

DiGi's Clausen said DiGi customers could subscribe via a three-step mobile application. "All they need to do is SMS TKD' to 2000 or visit for further information."
