KUALA LUMPUR, 3 SEPTEMBER 2009 Malaysia's first Great ICT Sale 2009, which targetted local SMEs, has delivered outstanding results, according to government agency MDeC.
MDeC director, global profiling and portfolio management, Rizatuddin Ramly, said: Over five weeks, the three major iterations of the MSC [Multimedia Supercorridor] Malaysia Great ICT Sale (GIS) in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor) have raised US$2.2 million [RM7.75 million] worth of high potential opportunity business from 804 leads, which is 150 per cent above the original leads target of US$850,702 to US$1.42 million [RM3 million to RM5 million].
GIS was held in conjunction with the National ICT Month 2009 (20 July to 20 August) and targetted local SMEs, which involved the gathering of 30 MSC Malaysia Status companies offering cost-savings on unique bundles of ICT products and services for SMEs, such as e-commerce solutions, SaaS [software-as-a-service] solutions, Niche SME solutions, Mobile Marketing or M-Commerce solutions and Smart SOHO solutions, said Ramly, who acted as the sale's programme head.
He added that in addition to support from Telekom Malaysia, which provided online facilities, close collaboration with government agencies such as SMIDEC [Small and Medium Industries Development Corporation], Malaysian Debt Ventures [MDV] and financial institutions contributed to the response, coupled with the easy financing options made available to SMEs interested in buying the software bundles.
We are very happy at how the campaign progressed and the results show that there is a need for a platform to stimulate Malaysian SME growth and support new business opportunities in this market as a catalyst for further economic growth in the country, said MDeC vice president, industry development division, Saifol Bahri Mohamad Shamlan. The MSC Malaysia Great ICT Sale has contributed significantly to our long-term aims of assisting local SMEs move up the value-chain, increasing demand for local ICT products and services, and creating a national platform to encourage local ICT adoption.
Not only are we excited about the better-than-expected results from GIS, but also over the spill-over effect this effort has created among the SME users and SME IT vendors in building win-win relationships, now that better awareness has been catalysed by the sale, said Shamlan.
The GIS has the benefit of the three Ss' in terms of a Stimulus effect, focus on SMEs and, of course, the attraction of a Sale model, he added.
Future GIS plans
MDeC chief executive officer, Dato' Badlisham Ghazali said due to the campaign's success, the MSC Malaysia Great ICT Sale would be an annual event, extending its reach to Sabah and Sarawak.
Ultimately, all initiatives by MDeC are tied closely to the national agenda of moving Malaysia's economy towards one that is productivity-led, driven largely by innovation, said Badlisham. To this end, SMEs continue to be a key factor in this endeavour given that they comprise more than 99 per cent of businesses established in Malaysia.
