The NSW government has unveiled a new ICT policy designed to help government agencies with technology investment and planning decisions.
According to the ICT Investment Policy and Guidelines, all technology investments will need to comply with information management, data centre reform, corporate and shared services reform.
Government agencies are also being asked to:
- Consider 'as a service' models such as cloud computing
- Implement online access and support the sharing of data between agencies
- Focus on collaboration and re-use of existing ICT solutions
- Demonstrate better value to the NSW government and citizens over the life of the investment
In addition, the NSW government's ICT leadership group will consider technology plans and proposals in the planning stage to identify opportunities where whole of government IT initiatives may provide better value.
NSW Minister for Finance and Services Andrew Constance said the policy will help agencies reduce costs by adopting ICT as a service or cloud-based delivery models.
"The framework is designed to minimise duplication and support common approaches that promote efficiencies across government," he said in a statement.
"Importantly, the ICT Investment Policy and Guidelines will help ensure government-held information is managed in a consistent way to deliver better services to the community."
The policy is part of the NSW government's ICT Strategy which is designed to get better value out of the government's $2 billion annual investment in technology.
"The Service NSW online portal is just one example of how we are providing residents and businesses with better access to a range of government services," said Constance.
The online portal is part of a 'one-stop shop' for government services, with NSW residents able to access them through 18 Service NSW centres and a 24-hour call centre.
