Parallels intensifies focus on cloud for SMBs

New services and partnerships were announced at Parallels Summit 2012.

Parallels recently announced a range of services and forged new partnerships to intensify its focus on serving the cloud services needs of the small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

Announced at last week's Parallels Summit 2012 in Orlando, Florida, U.S - a global event drawing more than 1,500 attendees - were new software, new service capabilities, partnerships with top service providers, and an updated market research predicting a 26-percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the SMB cloud services market.

The Parallels SMB Cloud Insights study also revealed that in North America, the SMB market grew 25 percent in 2011 to reach US$15.1 billion. Globally, the market for cloud services for SMBs is expected to grow to US$68 billion by 2014. SMBs with less than 20 employees are three times more likely to choose cloud services over on-premise servers, the study noted.

Guided by this expected market growth, Parallels announced its product roadmap to include: 

Parallels Automation for Hosted PBX - a full-featured virtual PBX enablement solution for hosting providers of any size to launch PBX services;

Parallels Plesk 11 Preview - which Parallels refers to as a complete panel solution for Web hosting; and

Parallels Plesk Automation (PPA) preview - a multi-server automation solution for hosting companies using Parallels Plesk Panel.

Ecosystem

Parallels also announced an expanded ecosystem of partners who can take advantage of revenue opportunities from the expected growth in cloud services adoption. The company introduced an application packaging standard to help its ecosystem of independent software vendors (ISVs) by providing a sales channel through 5,000 Parallels service providers and resellers can serve the SMBs. Hosting providers and other cloud service providers can also access a range of APS-certified applications and services, Parallels said.

Parallels also boasted of establishing or expanding over 300 partnerships across the hosting ecosystem in the past year, including service providers (Comline Clouds Automation, KDDI, KT, LuxCloud, Outsourcery, PacHosting, ReadySpace, Reg.ru, SKB Kontur, TDC Hosting, Telekom Malaysia, Tsukaeru.net, UberGlobal, UPC, Virtual IT), leading resellers, and over 100 ISVs through APS certification.

"The combination of the most advanced hosting and cloud services delivery software, market and operational expertise, plus a broad and growing partner ecosystem, is unique to Parallels and unrivalled in the industry," said Birger Steen, CEO, Parallels. "If service providers expect to be successful, they need to have access to deep knowledge, the latest technology, and a vast partner ecosystem, which builds a foundation for a complete and integrated cloud services portfolio that meets the needs of SMBs."

In a vendor report by IDC released this month, the independent analyst firm said "the company (Parallels) is well-positioned to establish an up-the-stack presence in the service delivery/enablement platforms of SMB cloud IT supply chain participants."
