MANILA, PHILIPPINES, 22 MARCH 2011 – Satellite communications provider Inmarsat said it is now offering data capability on its satellite phone, IsatPhone Pro.
The data services, capable of an effective data rate of up to 20 Kbps, are using the Inmarsat-4 satellites which have been designed specifically to handle data communications, the company said.
Drew Brandy, director of land services, Inmarsat, said testing with the IsatPhone Pro even exceeded 20 Kbps throughput with plain text e-mail. He said the service is ideal for users accessing e-mails, jpegs, documents or PDFs. “IsatPhone Pro is ideally suited for use as a data service,” he added.
To make the service work, the IsatPhone Pro has to be placed on its side with the antenna deployed for connection to the satellite while a micro USB cable connects it to a laptop.
Firmware upgrades for the IsatPhone Pro, which was launched last year, will be available by 31 March. The company said more service enhancements will be added to the phone along with the upgrade but did not disclose details of what these additional enhancements will be.
