Singapore's water system is getting an upgrade to enable the Public Utilities Board (PUB) to manage the country's water resources and operations efficiently.
The PUB, Singapore's national water agency, recently awarded a contract to ST Electronics to provide consultancy, and develop and implement parts of an Intelligent Water Management System (IWMS) slated for completion by next year.
The project aims to integrate real time information on water resources in Singapore so that the agency can better manage its water operations across the entire water supply, water catchment, used water and drainage systems.
ST Electronics said it will build an Integrated Control Centre (ICC) to house PUB's existing control systems which will enable PUB to capture real time information. This will then enable collaborative planning among PUB's control centre, field teams and departments.
The system will use geospatial asset management system maps to help PUB capture critical information, including the location of water incidents such as damaged or leaking pipes. Using this information, response teams or vehicles can be quickly despatched to the affected area. The responding teams will be assisted with accurate information and route guidance, and their response route will be tracked to make sure that they get to the area soonest.
The IWMS is capable of voice and video transmission from the field to the ICC to give ICC officers accurate decisions based on the "live" information they receive from field.
Said Lee Fook Sun, president, ST Electronics: "The pressures on infrastructure posed by urbanisation are a challenge faced by many growing cities. ST Electronics is therefore working towards a wide range of eco-enabling ICT solutions incorporating intelligent diagnostic and analytics systems and smart utilities solutions such as automated meter readers and intelligent energy grids to help growing cities manage resources more efficiently and to remain clean and secure."
