WatchGuard security solutions for Tokyo Motor Show 2013

Seattle vendor’s UTM chosen anew by exposition organizers

Over 900,000 visitors flocked to the Tokyo Motor Show 2013 last Nov. 22 to December 1 and WatchGuard Technologies stood sentinel as it  assisted the 10,300 journalists from several countries who covered the 10-day event.

The assistance came by way of enabling them to send online to their respective newsrooms their dispatches as well as graphics images and video clips in a speedy and secure manner.

Unified Threat Management

Specifically, this involved WatchGuard providing its suite of products from its Unified Threat Management platform to enable robust bandwidth as well as secure connections for the show's network installed for the exclusive use of media.

A press statement by the Seattle-based vendor said this was the fourth time it had provided the suite for such use in the event organized by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Tokyo Motor Show 2013 was the 43d yearly event of this kind staged by Japan's carmakers.

Since 1970, it has highlighted cutting edge technical and design concepts with regard to possible futures for the automobile and motor travel.

Theme for the 2013 show was the "Smart Mobile City" with Her Imperial Highness Princess Yoko of Mikasa as the event's patroness.

The WatchGuard statement said that its hardware onsite for the network exclusively for media's use had the capability to provide "35GB/second to more than 20,000 users and 2.5 million concurrent sessions" even as it could hamper blended threats to connectivity during such large-scale events.

The statement quoted WatchGuard Technologies APAC vice president Scott Robertson as explaining that the concentration of connections and amounts of data sent made the environment a robust target for cybercriminals.

He added that monitoring network performance and identifying potential threats "vital in ensuring the stable experience media expects."

He added that WatchGuard enabled media practicioners at Tokyo Motor Show 2013 "to simply focus on going about their business and not worry about cyberattacks."

Chairman of the Tokyo Motor Show 2013 was Toyota president and CEO Akio Toyoda.
