iPad Air 3 rumours: everything we know so far about Apple’s next tablet

Caitlin McGarry | Feb. 8, 2016

What's new with the camera?

The rumour: The iPad Air 3 is reportedly getting an LED flash below the rear-facing camera, which would turn the tablet into a better tool for photographers.

Plausible? Apple didn't add rear camera flash to the iPad Pro, but putting a great camera in a laptop-sized tablet doesn't make much sense. Camera improvements would make the iPad Air 3 a more compelling upgrade. Like the quad speakers, the new flash has been seen in drawings and a case design mockup, so it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility.

Will it have 3D Touch?

The rumour: No, at least not according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who put out a research note for KGI Securities predicting that 'production issues' will prevent Apple from adding 3D Touch to the iPad display.

Plausible? 3D Touch is one of the hallmark features of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, and is similar to the pressure-sensitive display in the Apple Watch and pressure-sensitive trackpad in the 12in MacBook. It would be a little strange if Apple didn't bring the iPad in line with the rest of its devices, but the company didn't put 3D Touch in the iPad Pro, either, so perhaps KGI's supply chain forecast is on point.

When is it coming out?

The rumour: The iPad Air 3 is on deck for a March debut, according to 9to5Mac, alongside an Apple Watch refresh and a 4in version of the iPhone 6s, reportedly called iPhone 5se.

Plausible? Anything can happen in the next six weeks - 9to5Mac expects Apple's next event to be held the week of 14 March - and Apple could possibly hold the next iPad for improvements in iOS 10, which will be the highlight of June's Worldwide Developers Conference.
