If you look at some of the other markets wed be competing againstfor example, very far North America, Canada, northern Europe, or way down south, New Zealand or Australiatheyre able to use more environmental-type cooling. They could use ambient air from outsidethe Kyoto Cooling principlebut in Singapore you can use none of that because the ambient temperature is too high, the humidity is too high and we have to use refrigerative methods. Its very simple. If were going to put data centres in this part of the world, then power consumption, and not cooling, has to be driven down.
How green are your customers data centres today?
It comes down to a number of things. If youre building a new data centre, making it green is very much front of mind. Then you will build green into the solution. When it comes to older data centres, theyre more constrained by the amount of electricity that is provided to them. Theyre green in that they run out of power; if you only have X amount of power you cant put Y amount of technology into the data centre, so theyre green in that they need to cut the amount of power they use, and the side effect is that greenness happens.
The other thing about an older data centre is newer technology, as a general rule, is hotter than older technology. And the older data centres are just not equipped to cool the types of heatloads that new technology generates. That works in our favour because we bring high-performing products designed in a time when green is important, and which therefore lower power consumption even as they see increasing workloads.
So its broken down into those two areas. If youre building something new you absolutely go out and build it green. And around the region there are several economies that drive that initiative directly. Japan, for example, drives that as a mandated part of building a new data centre. Here in Singapore, people are very conscious about the amount of power thats getting used because it is directly tied to the cost of the commodity. And also it doesnt take a rocket scientist to walk outside here and realise that its hot, so you definitely understand how cooling works.
I think that therere very different motivations for different companies and economies for going differing certain degrees of green but ultimately everyone just wants to use less power.
Please elaborate on the three to two to one transformation, as you see your customers in this part of the world undergoing it?
When people build data centresexcept for the very, very large onesthey build them in mind as 20-year investments, and thats reflected in their plans and construction works, et cetera.
