Mobile device users warned against risks of geolocation apps

Veronica C. Silva | Nov. 18, 2011
Users, particularly the enterprise, are urged to put more controls on their devices.

On the part of the consumers and employees, ISACA advises that they should weigh the risks behind using geolocation and their benefits. It is also not enough to simply embrace the latest technology. They should also educate themselves on the risks involved.

Fortunately, some countries are ahead of others in securing data and the enterprise.

Yung cited a survey ISACA conducted which showed about 50 percent of the respondents from Hong Kong and China saying their enterprises should provide guidance on security issues regarding the use of geolocation services on smartphones and other devices. Yung said this is rate is higher  than in other countries and regions around the world. "As such, we can see that Hong Kong and China are ahead of the other regions, in that the significance of security issues regarding geolocation has been recognised," he added.
