Over 2m iPhone 5 pre-orders in first day

Jim Martin | Sept. 19, 2012
Over 2m iPhone 5s were pre-ordered within 24 hours, so if you didn't get in quick, you'll have to wait until October for delivery. We look at other ways to get your hands on an iPhone 5 quickly.

More than two million iPhone 5 handsets were pre-ordered in just 24 hours after Apple's site starting accepting them on Friday.

This breaks the record of one million set by the iPhone 4S last September. Apple says the initial demand was so high that some people will have to wait until October to get their iPhone 5. Pre-order an iPhone 5 today on Apple's website and you'll have to wait 2-3 weeks before it's delivered.

"iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal," said Apple's Phil Schiller. "iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we've ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do."

However, if you still want to get your hands on an iPhone 5 before October, your best chance is to queue up at any one of Apple's 34 stores in the UK on Friday 21st September, with some opening at 8am. There you can buy an unlocked phone which you can use on any UK network that can supply you with the requisite nano SIM.

Of course, only EE will be able to deliver 4G in the UK any time soon, with O2 and Vodafone lacking the necessary infrastructure.

If you'd prefer to buy an iPhone 5 on contract, you stand a better chance of getting the colour and capacity you want from one of the mobile operators' shops. If you want to make sure you can take advantage of its 4G capabilities, head to an Orange or T-Mobile shop (or pre-order an iPhone 5 on their respective websites) as you'll be able to easily move over to EE when the 4G network goes live.
