SINGAPORE, 14 JANUARY 2010 Verizon Business and Motorola have launched a managed wireless security service for retailers who want to improve their IT performance.
In-store local area wireless networks in retail outlets are great for communicating with busy employees trying to close a sales deal. But users are challenged with security threats and search for applications that can safely boost their business processes.
Offered via Verizon's framework for retail, this new technology platform will address this problem and help retailers to improve their business processes.
Overcoming interoperability challenge
Verizon Business is focusing on increasing its support for retailers and this new managed service and framework is part of this goal. Ravi Bagal, vice president and global managing director retail, Verizon Business, noted interoperability to be a huge issue for retailers.
He said retailers often have to deal with several applications that do not integrate with each other. This interoperability challenge is harmful for their business and Verizon is trying to overcome this problem by its new solution. Verizon framework for retail can seamlessly connect disparate applications and allow retailers to put technology to work for them.
The new managed wireless security service is powered by Motorola AirDefense wireless security products that can protect 802.11 wireless local area networks (LANs) against several threats and unauthorised devices.
Delivered in the cloud
Verizon Business can completely monitor and manage this offering that also allows retailers to comply with PCI (payment card industry) data security standard requirements. This retail framework will be delivered in three phases. The first phase will include selling and management of hosted applications and devices from technology partners such as Motorola.
The framework will become available as a service in phase two and the framework services will be delivered in the cloud via the Internet in the third phase.
Adoption of wireless LAN technologies, fuelled by the recent ratification of the 802.11n standard and the performance benefits it offers, continues to rapidly expand in the retail sector and along with it targeted security threats, said Mark Kroh, vice president of North America channels, Motorola enterprise mobility solutions. By leveraging Motorola AirDefense's industry-leading wireless security technologies, Verizon is providing retailers a safe, mobile in-store experience with 24x7 management of their wireless networks.
