Samsung announced it will hold an unpack 2 event on Wednesday, October 20
Samsung just sent out invitations to an event that will take place online on Wednesday, October 20 at 7 am / 10 am ET called "Galaxy Unpacked Part 2," which may indicate that we may not be seeing all-new Galaxy phones, but iterations of existing ones.
With Samsung's announcement, Google's Pixel 6 launch on Tuesday, and now Samsung's smaller event on Wednesday.
In addition to the images on the invitation, Samsung's press release hinted at some personalization of the Galaxy devices: "Our users are multifaceted, with diverse, interesting and unique lifestyles. Therefore, the technology they use every day should reflect their personality."I will attend Galaxy Unpack Part 2 on Friday to learn how Samsung Electronics is developing new experiences of self-expression through technology."
That may mean something, but it seems to hint at new colors for the Galaxy phone and maybe even a full customization option. For example, I could imagine creating a Z Flip 3 on each side of the fold with the colors I chose, and the trailer image might hint at that. In the Z Fold 2, Samsung gives users the option to choose the color of the hinge, although that option isn't available in the Z Fold 3 (at least so far).
Of course, none of the customizations can match the original Moto X. The original Moto X allowed users to choose any different color and even the phone's material -- including bamboo. Samsung seems unlikely to be willing to go that far.
What seems even less likely is the Galaxy S21 FE, a low-cost "fan version" of the Galaxy S21 that has been rumored for some time. This is unlikely, mainly because the S21 FE is currently in a state of limbo, with it either delayed or canceled due to chip shortages. Sammobile reports that Samsung is still considering launching the S21 FE in January.
No matter what Samsung Electronics announces on Wednesday, it will have a hard time getting attention after Sturm(Apple) and Drang(Google). But the launch of the Pixel 6 on Wednesday may be a strategic exercise for Samsung.
Speaking of it being a busy week, if you're in New York, you can get a discount with the code $99NOW, right here. That leaves something for another tech company to announce on Thursday the 21st. Have you heard from OnePlus lately?
