Tantalum carbide preparation and applications

What is tantalum carbide?
Tantalum carbide is a light brown metallic cubic crystal powder, belonging to the sodium chloride cubic crystal system. Tantalum carbide is also used as an inhibitor for grain growth of cemented carbide sintering, which has an obvious effect on inhibiting grain growth. The density is 14.3g/cm3. Insoluble in water, insoluble in inorganic acid, soluble in hydrofluoric acid, and nitric acid mixed acid and decomposition. It has strong oxidation resistance and is easily melted and decomposed by potassium pyrosulfate. High conductivity, 30 ω resistance at room temperature, showing superconductivity. Used in powder metallurgy, cutting tools, fine ceramics, chemical vapor deposition, hard wear-resistant alloy tools, tools, molds, and wear-resistant structural parts additive, improve the toughness of alloy. The sintered body of tantalum carbide shows the golden color and can be used as a watch decoration.

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD)
This method is a technology of depositing solid film coating on the substrate surface using a space gas-phase chemical reaction. Because the whole reaction of this method is based on thermodynamics, CVD film has the advantages of good adhesion and coating around, dense film layer, and high bonding strength of film base, which can meet the realization of single and multiple multilayer composite coatings beyond TiC, such as TiN, TiCN, ISBN, etc.
The disadvantage of this method is that the process temperature is high (generally in 900~1200℃), the high temperature makes the steel matrix will soften after treatment also needs to re-vacuum quenching, the process is more complex, the workpiece is easy to deform, resulting in the bending strength of the matrix material decreased; And in the process of preparation will produce harmful waste gas, waste liquid, easy to cause industrial pollution, which conflicts with the green industry advocated by the country today, which also limits the comprehensive promotion and use of this method.
Titanium carbide fund ceramics application
(1) Cutting metal tool: new titanium carbide fund ceramics is a tool material developed rapidly in recent years, high comprehensive performance, in the same cutting conditions, its wear resistance is much higher than ordinary hard alloy. The wear resistance of YT14 and YT15 cemented carbide is 5 ~8 times higher than that of YT14 and YT15 cemented carbide in high-speed cutting. At present, titanium carbide ceramic has been made into a variety of blades, used for fine boring of holes and "car instead of grinding" and other finishing fields.
(2) Aerospace industry: TiC/Cu cermets prepared by high temperature sintered skeleton infiltration process have good ablative resistance and have the potential as rocket throat lining and protective plate materials.
