Properties And Application of Boron Carbide Ceramic

Boron carbide clay is an important component of modern ceramics. It has a high melting temperature, high hardness and low corrosion resistance. It's widely used for nuclear energy, bulletproof armour, and wear resistant materials.
The current depth and breadth of research in this area is not sufficient. boron carbide ceramics These numbers are rising. Researchers are also working to improve the practicality of sintering technology.

Ceramics boron carbide properties

Boron carbide ceramics These are exceptionally hard. Its microhardness averages 50000mpa (50gpa), just below diamond (90-100gpa), CBN (80-90gpa), etc. It can grind 60%-70% of a diamond. This is 1-2x the grinding power of siC. It exhibits excellent resistance to acid-base and has a low coefficient of thermal extension (4.5x10-6), which makes it extremely thermal stable. However, it is able to absorb qualitatively thermal neutrons. This has limited impact on resistance and high fracture.
Boron carbide can withstand air corrosion of 1000 degrees, but is easily oxidized in an atmosphere with higher temperatures. Boron carbide resists acid and alkali well and can be used in conjunction with most molten metallics.

Preparation Boron carbide ceramics

Boron carbide ceramics Many methods can be used to make B4C. For dense B4C, hot pressing and sintering are the most common methods.
B4C can be obtained through hot pressing and sintering to reach 98% theoretical density. You can prepare the B4C in a furnace that burns or by using a regular fiery press furnace. Temperature is 2100F, pressure 80-100mpa. This temperature must be kept in place for several minutes.

Because of the low thermal shock resistance, B4C should be cooled slowly. Hot pressing temperatures should not exceed 2150°C. It should reach 2150. The B4C–C eutectic fluid phase will form. If the temperature falls below 21, the product will become less dense. The B4C ultrafine powder can produce high density, hardness ceramics made of Boron carbide.

There is also no hot pressing, but there are other options. The requirements for pressureless interfacing of carbide powder are extremely high. It was found that the ultrafine powder must be =3um and have a low oxygen level to enable the pressureless densification process of pure Boron carbide. The temperature range for sintering is between 2250 and 2350.

Pressureless sintering using additives involves removing the oxide layer of Bori carbide. The additives are used to activate grain boundary and increase volume diffusion. To achieve higher frequencies (90-95%), at lower temperatures (2200-2200), the temperature is slightly lower (2000-2200). Results show that Al and Si can be used respectively as sintering agents and were sintered at 2050 with atmospheric pressure for 180min. The composite ceramics' relative density is greater than 93%. boron carbide ceramics Al, 344mpa strength for bending of the boron carbide ceramics Si.

You can also use hot isostatic press sintering or discharge plasma sintering. boron carbide ceramics These are not covered here. But hot pressing is an established method for preparing puree. boron carbide ceramics .

Applications of boron-caride ceramics

1. Armor field bulletproof

B4C Ceramics is the most effective material for bulletproof vests, helmets and armor due to its light weight, superior hardness, high elastic modulus and super-high hardness.

Presently, boron carbide ceramics These ceramics are often used to make ceramic armor. B4C ceramics have a lower bulletproof rating than conventional materials. They are also lighter and less difficult to use. B4C ceramics are ideal for use on armed helicopters, as they can resist the effects of shells. Boron carbide ceramics BAE Systems Advanced Ceramics made the "interceptor", bulletproof clothes for the US army.

2. Wear-resistant technology

Many nozzles with high hardness made from B4C are used in engineering and wear-resistant technology. These nozzles can be used as the desander or high-pressure water cutting nozzles for ship rust removal. Boron carbide, which is an abrasive for hard materials like cemented carbide or engineering ceramics, can reduce grinding costs by significantly reducing the price of polishing, fine, and grinding.

3. A thermoelectric couple

The thermoelectricity of B4C allowed for the preparation of a temperature differential pair capable of measuring 2200. These were made by sintering in Japan, Germany and used to measure and control high temperature. The high thermal stability and reliability of the material allow it to be used for many times and reliably.

Boron carbide ceramics This is a significant property that has been extensively used. In the future it will grow even more.
