What is Silicon Nitride?

Silicon nitride has an organic chemical formula of Si3N4. It is an important structural ceramic material, with high hardness and inherent lubricity. It also wears well. It is also resistant to heat and cold. It is resistant to heat and cold, even if heated to over 1000°C in the air. This is because of the exceptional characteristics of silicon-nitride ceramics. Silicon nitride ceramics are used for high-temperature engineering, advanced refractories and chemical industry sealing components. They also can be used as tools and cutting instruments in the machining sector.

Because silicon nitride forms strong bonds with aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, silicon carbide, thorium dioxide, boron and thorium dioxide it can be used to modify different proportions.

Silicon nitride can also applied to solar cells. After the silicon-nitride nitride is plated using the PECVD process, it can be used as an antireflection film to reduce reflection of incident sunlight. However, during deposition of silicon nitride, hydrogen atoms from the reaction product enter silicon nitride and the silicon wafer. This plays a part in passingivating defects. The ratio between silicon nitride atoms and silicon nutrides is not exactly 4:3, but it fluctuates according to process conditions. The film’s physical properties are affected by different atomic ratios.

Silicon nitride’s excellent electrical, thermal and physical properties make it a popular choice for electric furnaces, aircraft engines, gas turbines and ultra-high temperatures.
