The question you most want to ask about boron carbide

What is Boron carbide?
Boron carbide, also known as Black Diamond, is an inorganic form. The chemical form is B₄C. It is one of the three hardest materials known (after diamond and cubic boron nitride) and is used in tank armor, bullet-proof clothing and many industrial applications. It has a Mohs hardness of about 9.5. It was discovered in the 19th century as a by-product of research on metal borides and was not studied scientifically until the 1930s. Boron carbide can be prepared by reducing boron trioxide with carbon in an electric furnace.

Is boron carbide a ceramic?
Boron carbide is one of the hardest ceramic materials known (see Table 7.1), falling just short of diamond and cubic boron nitride. Because of its low density (∼2520 kg/m3), it has become the material of choice for body armor systems (Crouch, 2009).
Is boron carbide expensive?
Boron carbide, like tungsten carbide, is used in many kinds of machinery to make tools and other kinds of hard-wearing equipment. ... This method uses a lot of energy and time, making boron carbide products up to 10 times more expensive than other, less hard-wearing ceramic materials which currently dominate the market.
What is boron carbide steel?
Boron carbide (chemical formula approximately B4C) is an extremely hard boron–carbon ceramic and covalent material used in tank armor, bulletproof vests, engine sabotage powders, as well as numerous industrial applications.
Is boron carbide toxic?
Specific Hazards Arising from the Material: May release toxic fumes if involved in a fire. Special Protective Equipment and Precautions for Firefighters: Wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
What is the performance of boron carbide?
Boron carbide does not react with acid and alkali solutions and it has high chemical potential, neutron absorption, wear resistance and semiconductor conductivity. It is one of the most stable substances to acids and is stable in all concentrated or dilute solutions of acid or alkaline water. Boron carbide is stable under 800℃ in the air environment, due to the higher temperature of the oxidation of boron oxide in the gas phase loss, resulting in its instability, oxidation to form carbon dioxide and boron trioxide.
What is boron carbide used for?
1. Controlled nuclear fission
Boron carbide can absorb large amounts of neutrons without forming any radioactive isotopes, making it an ideal neutron absorber for nuclear power plants, where neutron absorbers control the rate of nuclear fission.
2. Abrasive materials
Because boron carbide has a high melting point, it is not easy to cast into artifacts, but by melting the powder at high temperatures, it can be machined into simple shapes. It can be used for grinding, grinding, drilling and polishing hard materials such as hard alloy and precious stone.
3. Coating paint
Boron carbide can also be used as a ceramic coating for warships and helicopters. It is lightweight and can resist armor-piercing bullets penetrating the hot-pressed coating as a whole.
