What is Ti3AlC2?

TiAlC is MAX Phase-like structured and crystallizes in the hexagonal P6/mmc space group. There are two inequivalent Ti sites. Ti is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry in the first Ti site to three equivalent Al and three equivalent C atoms. All Ti–Al bond lengths are 2.89 Å. Titanium carbide is used to prepare cermets, frequently used to machine steel materials at high cutting speeds. Ti 3 AlC 2 has the Ti 3 SiC 2 structure with lattice parameters of a=0.3075 nm and c=1.858 nm. Due to its hydrophilicity, high conductivity, and excellent adsorption, antibacterial, and reducing properties, Ti3C2Tx MXene has been widely used in water treatment in recent years, such as desalination, removal of heavy metals, organic dyes, radionuclides, and bacteria.

 

Effect of Ti3AlC2 MAX Phase on Structure

Ti3C2Tx MXene is an attractive two-dimensional (2D) material for various applications; however, measured properties vary widely from study to study. A potential factor to the property differences relates to variability in the MAX phase precursors. To illustrate this, Ti3AlC2, the precursor for Ti3C2Tx MXene, was synthesized using three carbon sources (graphite, carbon lampblack, and titanium carbide (TiC)) at 1650 °C for two h. Thermal analysis was utilized to examine the reaction mechanism, indicating that the three carbon sources experience different reaction pathways. The Ti3AlC2 MAX powders were then converted into Ti3C2Tx MXene and delaminated. The products revealed differences in lateral flake size, chemical composition, chemical stability in deionized water, and electrical conductivity.

 

Microstructure-oxidation resistance relationship in Ti3AlC2 MAX Phase

Spark Plasma Sintering and Hot Isostatic Pressing were used to synthesize coarse-grained and fine-grained Ti3AlC2 specimens. Moreover, Spark Plasma Sintering processing parameters were modified to vary the TiC, Al2O3, and TixAly impurity and porosity in the fine-grained samples. The influence of the Ti3AlC2 microstructure on the oxidation resistance was assessed. It is demonstrated that the grain size can drastically modify the oxidation resistance. The higher density of grain boundaries in fine-grained specimens increases the number of Al diffusion paths and leads to forming a protective alumina scale. Al diffusion is the rate-limiting step of the α−Al2O3 formation in the coarse-grained samples, and TiO2 is formed simultaneously with alumina. TiC impurities and porosity are demonstrated to be detrimental to the oxidation resistance in the 800°C – 1000°C temperature range by favoring TiO2 formation. Finally, it is also shown that, for fine-grained specimens, the oxide scale grows very slowly for oxidation times in the 20-40 days range.
