A new online repair shop that will provide more than 200 separate parts and tools for the iPhone 12 and 13 phones will begin operations in the US in early 2022, followed by the UK and other countries. The service will start by offering screen, battery, and camera parts, which are most commonly used for iPhone repairs.
While the accompanying press release depicts people repairing phones at kitchen tables and desks, Apple said the service would not be for "personal technicians with knowledge and experience repairing electronic devices."
First, Apple said, customers should consult official repair manuals before ordering necessary parts. Customers who return broken parts for recycling will receive a credit line on their next purchase.
Apple added: "For the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair supplier with a certified technician who uses genuine Apple accessories is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair."
Apple said the service would also work with Macs using the M1 chip, which went on sale last year. The company said it would offer additional parts and repair services for the iPhone 12 and 13 later next year.
The move was welcomed by tech product repair company iFixit, which tweeted: "We're happy to see Apple acknowledge what we've known all along: everyone is talented enough to fix iPhones."

Apple has long been urged to open up phone repair services to its phone owners. In July, Steve Wozniak, Apple's co-founder, threw his support behind "right to fix" campaigners." If I hadn't grown up in a very open technology world, we wouldn't have Apple," he said."It is time to recognize the right to repair more fully."
