Has red, dark-red, or black transparent crystals. Also, has soft, brown amorphous materials. The chemical properties are stable and it doesn’t dissolve in concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acids, nor does it in hydrofluoric or sulfuric acids.
Boron phosphide shares many properties with refractory substances. It has similar properties to diamond and boron-nitride, and is harder than silicon carbide. It can have an anti-oxidation property even when heated to a temperature between 800 and 10,000 degrees Celsius in the atmosphere. When boron is heated, the phosphorus in it disappears and a light grey residue forms. Boron-phosphide ignites at a low temperature in chloride, but ignites at a higher temperature in bromine. It can be easily decomposed in oxygen by most metals at 200degC.
How is boron phosphide used?
The boron film has better mechanical properties than germanium carbide. It also has a higher adhesion to diamond and is easier to deposit on large areas. In comparison with germanium carbide boron has superior mechanical properties. In order to reduce the internal stress, boron is a good material for anti-reflection films for infrared windows on high-speed aircraft.

Boron-phosphide film is a corrosion-resistant material that’s ideal for the infrared windows of submarine telescopes. The submarine’s infrared window is immersed into the seawater environment once the telescope window has gone out to sea. The window should not only have a high transmittance in order to maintain the sensitivity of the photoelectric systems, but it must also be able resist corrosion caused by chemicals found in seawater. The boron film is corrosion-resistant and has good chemical resistance. It can protect infrared glass against seawater erosion, ensuring its original optical performance.
