Properties of molybdenum disulfide

The chemical formula MoS2. It is the main component of natural molybdenite; Melting point of 1185, density 4.80g/cm 3(14), Mohs hardness 1 ~ 1.5. Molybdenum disulfide is stable when heated to 1300 in a vacuum. It begins to decompose at 1370, producing sulfur and part of Mo2S3. Molybdenum and sulfur metals are produced at 1600. Molybdenum disulfide was heated in air and began to oxidize slowly at 315. The oxidation rate increased with the increase in temperature. Among molybdenum sulfides, molybdenum disulfide is the most stable at high temperatures, where it reacts with chlorine gas and oxygen to form MoCl5 and MoO3. Molybdenum disulfide is dissolved only in aqua regia and boiled concentrated sulfuric acid. Molybdenum disulfide has hexagonal cells of hexagonal axisymmetric symmetry, each containing two molybdenum atoms. It is a layered structure, with each layer containing two sulfur atoms separated by a layer of molybdenum atoms. Molybdenum disulfide can be prepared by directly combining molybdenum and sulfur, heating molybdenum oxide in a hydrogen sulfide atmosphere, or melting molybdenum oxide with a mixture of potassium carbonate and sulfur. Molybdenum disulfide, like graphite, has good lubricity and is an effective lubricant, especially under high temperatures and pressure. It also has diamagnetism and can be used as a linear photoconductor and a semiconductor showing P-type or N-type conductivity. It has the function of rectification and energy exchange. It can also be used as an effective catalyst for dehydrogenating complex hydrocarbons.
