What is Nickel Titanium

Nickel Titanium (also known as Nitinol™) is the class of materials known as the shape memory alloys. nitinol powder Specific surface area(m2/g) is 12.3, Ni-Ti alloy powder Volume density(g/cm3) is 0.15, nitinol powder Color is Black. Nitinol is used to manufacture catheter tubes, guidewires, stone retrieval baskets, filters, needles, dental files, archwires, and other surgical instruments (6). A particularly important use of Nitinol is in stents. Nitinol or Nickel Titanium (also known as NiTi) is in unique class of shape memory alloys. Generally speaking, Nitinol is expensive and difficult to process and machine. But its unique properties, such as superelasticity, shape memory, biocompatibility and fatigue resistance, make it essential for medical applications. For some applications, therefore, it is the only possible solution. Overall complications rates varied (1% – 17%), including bleeding and hematoma (1%-10%), buttock claudication (9.4%), endoleaks (5.3%), erectile dysfunction (1.0%), and groin hematoma (1.1%). Nickel titanium alloy (Nitinol) is a memory alloy; it's special performance is that it can track and record the relation between a range of temperatures and shapes but not only one or two-point temperatures and shapes. The shape memory effect and superelasticity, uncommon in other implant alloys, make Nitinol a fascinating material for surgical applications. It provides the possibility to make self-locking, self-expanding and self-compressing implants. The powder can be used in various types of metal 3D printers, including Renishaw from the UK, EOS from Germany, Concept Laser, 3D systems from the United States. The nickel-titanium alloy (57Ni-43Ti in wt%) was atomized by the plasma rotating electrode process (PREP). The PREP parameters such as plasma arc current, rotating electrode speed with corresponding PREP powder size range in weight percentage analysis, powder morphology and capability of cells were studied by scanning electron microscopies, Inductively Coupled Plasma and X-ray diffraction techniques. The composition has no obvious changes from the electrode of the produced powders. Weight percentage up to 31.8% of the range under 300 μm while the rotation electrode speed increase to 12k rpm. Spherical and flat with smooth surfaces were observed in different size ranges. The brittle phase was not observed in XRD data. The nitinol powder has high capability, with cells showing no cytotoxicity and well-cell adhesion in the in vivo assay.
