Zirconia Ceramics Properties and Uses

What is zirconia pottery?

Zirconia ZrO2 can be described as the crystalline ore of zirconium. Its color ranges from white to black. Most common is the monoclinic structure. Zirconia, one of its most important materials, is very popular.

Zirconia (a form of ceramic material) is used for several purposes.

This structure of zirconia contains metal atoms and raises the question about whether zirconia could be classified as a type of ceramic. This allows zirconia combine the high inherent strength of metals and the biocompatibility that ceramics offer.

Most common zirconia grade

Yttria spartaned zirconia YYPSZ

Youtria partially stabilized zirconia, or Y-PSZ (Yttria partial stabilized Zirconia) can be doped with the yttrium oxygen (Y2O3) as an stabilizer. This stabilizer will enhance the grain structure of the material and transform it from monoclinic towards tetragonal. This material is finer than all other ceramics and has the best bending strength. It’s very resistant to impact and wear as well as having low thermal conductivity. This usually makes it a good substitute for metal. The materials toughness is due to the inclusion of ytrium oxide (Yttria). A material that is under stress will have a crystal structure change from monoclinic or tetragonal, which can lead to an approximately 3-5% increase in its highly localized volumes. By increasing the volume, cracks shrink, reducing their potential to grow or propagate. This leads to the materials low sensitivity and excellent bending properties.

Magnesium or partially stabilised zirconia.

Zirconia that has been doped with magnesium dioxide (MgO), may also cause compression in the internal matrix. However this structure can be described as cubic. M-PSZ does not experience phase migration, so it has better resistance to heat and humidity. M-PSZ maintains its strength, even under high temperature and humidity conditions.

Zirconia-ceramics Processing

Zirconia can be transformed into complex geometric shapes easily using its raw blanks. The main body of zirconia ceramics will shrink approximately 20% because it is required for the final densification process. These shrinkages make it impossible for pre-sintering to be within very precise tolerances.

When processing sintered materials, diamond tools should be used in order to meet very tight tolerances. The diamond coated grinding wheel / tool is used to cut the material into desired shapes. It can be time-consuming, expensive and difficult due to the hardness and inherent toughness of this material.
