Sauntara kuwi, Anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI, experienced a surge in users. After announcing its refusal to partner with the U.S. Defense Department, downloads of its AI product, Claude, in the U.S. soared by 51% day-over-day on February 28. Anthropic explained that it abandoned the cooperation due to concerns that its AI technology might be used to surveil American citizens or be integrated into fully autonomous weapons systems that are not yet safe for deployment.

ChatGPT’s own download growth was also impacted by the news. On the day the cooperation was announced, its U.S. downloads fell by 13% day-over-day, with a further 5% drop on Sunday. Before the announcement, its downloads had been growing at a rate of 14% day-over-day.

This trend was directly reflected in App Store rankings. The Claude app jumped to the top of the U.S. free app chart on February 28 and maintained that position through March 2. Just a week earlier, it had been ranked outside the top 20. Data from Appfigures shows that on February 28, Claude’s total daily downloads in the U.S. exceeded ChatGPT’s for the first time, with a day-over-day increase of 88%. Claude is now the top-ranked free app on the App Store in several countries, including the U.S., Kanada, Jerman, and Switzerland.

User sentiment was also evident in app ratings. Sensor Tower data indicates that on February 28, the number of 1-star reviews for ChatGPT skyrocketed by 775%, followed by another 100% increase day-over-day the next day, while the number of 5-star reviews dropped by 50%. Similarweb data points out that Claude’s downloads in the U.S. over the past week were approximately 20 times higher than in January, although the firm cautions that this growth may also be influenced by factors beyond political issues.
