Small: ultra small light metal nanocrystals with UV response

as a new kind of nano materials small size metal clusters show unique electron transfer behavior show a wide range of potential applications in the next generation of optoelectronic devices catalytic materials biomedical fields. For a long time precious metals (such as gold silver platinum) have been the core of the research on metal clusters. Due to the limitation of intrinsic properties of materials the optical responses of noble metal nanoparticles such as plasmon photoluminescence are mainly located in the visible light b especially in the red light b less in the ultraviolet (below 400 nm) b. The real part of the complex refractive index of

aluminum is negative from ultraviolet to visible. Theoretical prediction shows that the spectral response of ultra-small al nanocrystals may be located in this b. However due to the active chemical properties of aluminum nanocrystals they are easy to be oxidized in the environment so there is no reliable solution chemical method to prepare aluminum nanoclusters.

recently Cheng Xiaoyu / he sailing team of School of Optoelectronic Science engineering of Zhejiang University has made important progress in the field of light metal nanoclusters. Using phosphate lig group the team prepared ultra-small aluminum nanocrystals with average particle size of only 2.7 nm optical response in the ultraviolet b by liquid-phase solution reduction method for the first time. The short-lived photoluminescence of aluminum nanoclusters is reported for the first time by using 300 nm excitation. The quantum efficiency is as high as 20% the emission wavelength is adjustable from 340 nm to 400 nm which illustrates the key role of surface oxides. Because the preparation method is simple reliable phosphoric acid can form a self-assembled monolayer structure similar to gold mercaptan on the surface of aluminum nanocrystals it is expected that this work will inspire the research of light metal nanoclusters. The related work of

was published in small (DOI: 10.1002 / small. 202002524). This work is supported by the national key R & D program the National Natural Science Foundation of China the basic scientific research funds of central universities. Part of the testing work was completed by Zhu Haiming’s research group Department of chemistry Zhejiang University.
