What is zinc sulfide?

Zinc sulfide is an inorganic chemical compound with a chemical formula of ZnS. It is white in appearance with a melting point of 1,700°C, a density of 3.98 g/cc, and a vapor pressure of 10-4 Torr at ~800°C. CVD Zinc Sulfide® and Cleartran®

Cleartran® is a form of CVD Zinc Sulfide® material modified by a post-deposition hot isostatic process. This process removes zinc hydrides from the crystal lattice, normalizes crystal structure, and purifies the material. These contribute to single crystal-like transmittance in the visible through far infrared ranges (0.35 -14 microns). With its low absorption and scatter throughout its broad transmitting range and high optical quality, Cleartran® is particularly well-suited for multi-spectral applications that require a single aperture for beam path for several wavebands. CVD Zinc Sulfide® and Cleartran® are chemically inert, non-hygroscopic, highly pure, theoretically dense, and easily machined. Custom diameters, rectangles, CNC-profiled blanks, generated lens blanks, prisms, and near-net-shape domes can be made to your specifications.

 

Efficient zinc sulfide cathode layers

We demonstrate efficient zinc sulfide cathode window layers in thin-film organic photovoltaics enabled by n-type doping zinc sulfide (ZnS) with aluminum sulfide (Al2S3) directly through co-deposition. Optimizing the Al2S3 concentration improves power conversion efficiency from 0.6% ± 0.2% in undoped ZnS window layer devices to 1.8% ± 0.1%, identical to control devices. The mechanism for this performance enhancement stems from the enhanced conductivity and interface energetics of ZnS upon n-type doping. This work expands the catalog of efficient, inorganic, non-toxic, cathode side window layers that could be effective in a range of thin-film photovoltaic technologies.
