What exactly is Sodium silicate?

Sodium silicate, also known as paohua alkali is an inorganic compound and its aqueous solution, often referred to as sodium silicate which is a type of mineral adhesive. The chemical formula for it is Na2O*nSiO2. It is a soluble silicate inorganic that has a variety of applications. The sodium silicate, which is soluble in water is colorless, lightly transparent or translucent glass body that is commonly used as a filler, fabric fire retardant, and adhesive.

What are the applications that Sodium Silicate is employed in?

Soaps and detergents

The sodium silicate is able to improve surface effects, like wetting with organic surfactants (reducing tension on the surface) and helps to keep tiny oil or dirt particles floating in detergent, or improving the capacity to get dirt off the surface.

The alkalinity of sodium silicate allows the neutralization of acidic soils and encourage the emulsification of oil and dispersing of protein.


Silicate sodium as a cardboard coating can improve the toughness of the cardboard as well as increase the resistance of it to water, fire and grease, as well as pests. Silicate is also employed as an oil repellent by itself.

It prevents the corrosion of pipelines and pumps caused by acidic water (for instance, mine drainage) and reduces the risk of corrosion during grinding of ball rods; and reduces the risk of corrosion on equipment used in the process as an ingredient in agglomeration, spray drying or dry detergent formulations and also metal parts used in disheswashing and laundry equipment. It is a component of the liquid that is used in the permanent auto cooling system. as an additive to water treatment chemicals in cooling towers and boilers.
