What is boron carbide?

Boron carburide (also known as black diamond) has a molecular formula of B4C. It is usually a grayish-black powder. It is one the hardest materials (the others are diamond and cubic Boron Nitride) and used in many industrial applications. Its Mohs is 9.3.

Applications of boron carbide

1.Control nuclear fission

Boron carbide absorbs a large number of neutrons and does not form radioisotopes. It is therefore an ideal neutron absorption material in nuclear power plants. The neutron absorbers control the rate at which nuclear fission occurs. The nuclear reactor yard is where the carbide is most commonly made. It is usually made into a controlled rod shape, but it can also be made into powder due to the larger surface area.

2.Abrasive material
