Boron carbide – Properties and Applications |

What is boron carbide?

Boron carburide (also known as black diamond) has a molecular formula of B4C. It is usually a grayish-black powder. It is one the hardest materials (the others are diamond and cubic Boron Nitride) and used in many industrial applications. Its Mohs is 9.3.

Due to its low density and high strength. Use in ceramic reinforced phases and wear-resistant materials. Especially in light armor, reactor neutron absorptions, etc. As boron carbide can be manufactured more easily and is cheaper than diamond or cubic boron, it is used more. In some cases, it can replace expensive stones like diamonds.

Applications of boron carbide

1.Control nuclear fission

Boron carbide absorbs a large number of neutrons and does not form radioisotopes. It is therefore an ideal neutron absorption material in nuclear power plants. The neutron absorbers control the rate at which nuclear fission occurs. The nuclear reactor yard is where the carbide is most commonly made. It is usually made into a controlled rod shape, but it can also be made into powder due to the larger surface area.

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 was stopped by Russia’s sand and boron-carbide drop.

2.Abrasive material

The boron carbide has been around for many years as a coarse-abrasive. Because of its high melting point it is difficult to make artificial products. However, by melting the powder in high temperatures, you can easily shape it. Useful for grinding and polishing materials such as precious stones and cemented carbide.

3.Coating

Boron carbide may also be used on warships or helicopters as a ceramic surface. It is lightweight with the ability to prevent armor-piercing bullets from penetrating a hot-pressed coating.

4.nozzle

It can also be used to make gun nozzles in the arms industry. Boron carbide, which is very hard and wear resistant, doesn’t react with acids and alkalis, can withstand high temperatures and pressures, and has high resistance to high/low temperature.

The boron-carbide sandblasting needle will gradually replace cemented carbide/tungsten, silicon carbide, silicon Nitride, aluminum Oxide, zirconium Oxide and other materials.

5.other

Boron carbide may also be used for the production of metal borides as well as the smelting of sodium boron or boron alloys, and in special welding.
