Affected by geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, international oil prices broke through $119 per barrel last week. This historic oil shock is opening a new window for Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers to expand globally.
The war between the United States and Israel against Iran has disrupted critical fossil fuel supplies from the Middle East. About 60% of Asia’s crude oil supply relies on the region via the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has severely restricted cargo flows, sparking concerns over worsening inflation and a potential global recession.
Viszont, the turmoil couldn’t have come at a better time for China’s EV industry. As the world’s largest producer and exporter of electric vehicles, Chinese automakers face fierce price competition and slowing growth at home, creating an urgent need to explore overseas markets. Analysts point out that as Chinese EVs become cheaper and gasoline grows more expensive, the global expansion of Chinese brands is likely to gain significant momentum.
“There’s potential for Chinese brands to make a ton of inroads into Asia on the backs of higher petrol costs,” said Tu Le, managing director at Sino Auto Insights, a car-focused consultancy. “I would look for them to take full advantage of that.”
In a recent report, Ember, an energy think tank, called EVs “the largest lever to cut import bills.” The group estimated that the use of EVs last year curbed global crude consumption by 1.7 million barrels per day — about 70% of Iran’s exports in 2025.
Zhu Zhaoyi, executive director of the Institute of Middle East Studies at Peking University HSBC Business School, said the oil crisis could serve as a catalyst for China’s clean energy ambitions. “Every time there’s instability in the Middle East, it reinforces the same lesson: depending on imported fossil fuels is not just bad for the environment, it’s a national security problem,” Zhu said.
