BYD recently unveiled its next-generationBlade Battery 2.0 system,” claiming it can deliver a stunning “240 miles of range in just 5 minutes.According to official data, the battery can charge from 10% Zu 70% in five minutes, and reach nearly full capacity in about four more minutes. Even in extreme cold of minus 20 degrees Celsius, it can charge from 20% Zu 97% in under 12 Minuten. This technology has the potential to eliminate consumer concerns about EV refueling speed, directly challenging the last core advantage of gasoline vehicles.

Jedoch, there’s a key caveat to this impressive figure: the ultra-fast charging speed can only be achieved when paired with BYD’s newFlash Chargingstations, which deliver a massive 1.5 megawatts of power. BYD has already completed 4,200 such stations across China and plans to add around 16,000 more by year-end, also equipping them with energy storage batteries to ease grid strain. For comparison, mainstream fast chargers in Europe and the U.S. are typically rated at 350 kW, obwohl 500 kW units are gradually being deployed.

The new battery continues to use Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry. While its energy density is lower than Nickel Manganese Cobalt batteries, its cost advantage is significant—LFP packs currently cost just $81 per kilowatt-hour, far less than NMC’s $128. BYD is trying to prove that, with极致 charging speed, LFP can also be viable for high-end models. The first vehicle to feature this battery will be the Yangwang U7 full-size sedan. Its range is rated at over 1,000 kilometers on the optimistic CLTC cycle, which translates to about 400 miles under the more realistic EPA cycle. While this slightly trails the Lucid Air Grand Touring’s 512 miles, the ability to recharge so rapidly could make range comparisons less relevant.

As the world’s largest EV manufacturer, BYD currently faces sales pressure—its combined sales for January and February 2026 dropped about 36% year-over-year—and intense competition from Tesla and domestic rivals like Li Auto and Xiaomi. This new flash-charging technology could become a key weapon to regain its edge in the price war and solidify customer loyalty.
